The Mobility Scheme: The Car Scheme for Disable People

If you suffer from a disability or illness that makes it hard for you to get around easily, then the Motability scheme is perfect for you. It is enabling disabled people to get mobile by exchanging their mobility allowance to lease a new car.

You are eligible for a Motability car if you’ve been awarded the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance for at least 12 months or the enhanced rate mobility component for Personal Independence Payment for 12 months or more. The Armed Forces Independence payment or War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement for 12 more or more also means you can get a mobility car.

If you don’t drive, you can still get a Motability vehicle and choose someone else to drive it. You can select up to 2 people to drive on your behalf. There are a lot of different vehicle types and makes you can choose from. You’ll only be paying for the lease of the vehicle, so it won’t belong to you, and if you stop receiving your benefit, you’ll have to return it. Your allowance will go directly to Motability each month to pay for your car lease, and the amount of your allowance that goes towards your vehicle will depend on which one you choose. If you want a more expensive vehicle, you might have to make a payment upfront to cover this.

As well as your vehicle you will get:

  • Insurance
  • Breakdown Cover
  • Vehicle Tax

You won’t be insured to use your vehicle for business purposes so you will need to get permission to do this by contacting RSA Motability, either in writing or over the phone.

Adaptations are also available and these are devices that can be fitted to a vehicle so that driving is safer and more comfortable, and getting in and out of the car is made easier. There are many adaptations available, many for no extra cost that could improve your motoring experience, including adaptations to help with:

  • Speed and steering
  • Stowage
  • Signalling and safety
  • Seating and access
