It’s fair to say that MPVs aren’t exactly known for desirable exterior styling – but you wouldn’t know it when looking at the new C4 SpaceTourer. The unobtrusive front bonnet curves down to a silver divider incorporating the Citroën chevron, which is flanked by slim-line LED running lights. Below the divider, the headlamps and attractive black air intake form a confident, forward-looking face on which the number plate appears to float.
The extensive use of glass is a particular delight. The panoramic windscreen, to which the A-pillar windows feel like an extension, stretches just above the front seats. This lets in the light from all directions, enhancing the feeling of space and calm inside the cabin.
The cabin of the C4 SpaceTourer has also received a stylish overhaul. It’s decked out in durable, high-quality plastics that look great while resisting the inevitable wear and tear associated with family use. The curvy-yet-angular instrument panel is centrally located on the dashboard, sitting aside from the steering wheel to emphasise the feeling of order.
The C4 SpaceTourer is particularly comfortable and roomy, even for an MPV. It manages to incorporate three identically-sized rear seats without losing space elsewhere, meaning no arguments about the middle place Parents of younger children will appreciate the option to attach three ISOFIX child seats. The boot is spacious too, offering a highly-usable 537 litres, which can be increased to a truly vast 1,851 litres if the rear seats are pushed forward, down and flat.
Engines and performance
The wide range of engines available in the C4 SpaceTourer means it will appeal to a variety of drivers. The entry-level petrol engine, available in the primary VTR and VTR+ trims, is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder PureTech turbo that delivers 128bhp – quiet in town, but capable on the motorway. At the top of the petrol range is the seriously punch 1.6-litre THP petrol, which pulls 163bhp.
Citroën’s highly-efficient diesel engines will appeal to distance drivers. The 1.6-litre BlueHDi 100 diesel, which delivers 98bhp, returns an outstanding 74.3mpg while emitting just 99g/km of CO2, exempting the car from road tax. The BlueHDi is also available in a still efficient, but more powerful 118bhp version. Both engines couple with the soft suspension to provide a relaxed driving experience.
Technology and safety
The C4 SpaceTourer's infotainment system sits within the central instrument panel and includes a wealth of features. The generous touchscreen is bright and vibrant, making the DAB radio, standard on the VTR+ trim level and above, easy and enjoyable to use. AUX and USB connection comes as standard, meaning great audio connectivity. If you opt for the Executive trim level, you’ll enjoy a reversing camera, sat-nav, and keyless entry and start. A further upgrade to Executive+ offers parking assistance and a blind-spot monitoring system for improved safety.
The C4 SpaceTourer achieves the five-star Euro NCAP safety rating essential for family vehicles. The cabin hosts numerous airbags, and electronic stability control comes as standard. Many will be drawn to the optional Serenity Pack that provides a lane-departure warning system and adaptive headlamps.
