Staycation Car Checks

Are you planning a staycation or long road trip? Then make sure you do these checks before you set off!

Staycations are becoming increasingly popular this year (we won't mention why though), so heres our list of essential checks to do to ensure your journey is as stress-free as possible!

1. Tyre Pressure

Having the correct tyre pressure is essential to make sure that your car can brake, grip and steer properly. You can find the right tyre pressure for your car in your handbook and on a panel just inside the drivers door. Top up with more air at your local garage/petrol station. Tyre pressure can also help with fuel economy.

2. Tread depth on Tyres

Tyres should have a minimum depth of 1.6mm across the central three quarters. It is important to check your tyre thread because it can affect your car's braking, handling and overal safety.

3. Windscreen wipers & screenwash

When was the last time you filled up your screenwash? If it's been a while, it's definately worth checking and adding more screenwash in so you can keep your windscreen clean throughout the journey. Driving with a dirty windscreen can be dangerous so make sure you check your winscreen wipers for wear and replace if needed.

Have a quick look for cracks or chips in your windscreen. If you find one, you should get it fixed as soon as possible.

4. Oil

Oil is vital in ensuring your car's engine is running smoothly. Running out could lead you stranded, not to mention the costly damage so this is an essential check to make. Most cars have a dipstick that allows you to check the oil level yourself. If you oil does need topping up, be careful not to overfill as this isn't great for the engine.

5. Lights

If you haven't checked your lights in a while then grab a friend and ask them to stand at the front and back of the car whilst you check they're all working.

6. Fuel

This one should go without saying but don't forget to top up your car with fuel or if you own and electric/hybrid make sure its fully charged!
